SCELC/EAST IMLS Planning Grant: Community Strategies to Expand Diversity and Inclusivity in the Collective Collection of Shared Print
In July of 2022, the Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium – SCELC, in collaboration with EAST, received an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) National Leadership Grant (LG-252402-OLS-22) for a project entitled “Community Strategies to Expand Diversity and Inclusivity in the Collective Collection of Shared Print”. The joint project was a Planning Grant originally awarded for 2 years in the amount of $149,986 with three major goals:
- Community Building – working with the Community Council (see below for members) as an advisory board, the Project Staff reviewed barriers to participation by minority-serving institutions (MSIs) in shared print programs such as EAST and SCELC and investigated strategies for addressing these barriers.
- Program Development and Collection Analysis – Working with vendor sourced software tools, a research methodology was designed to analyze the diversity of the library collections of both Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) as compared to those of similar predominantly white institutions (PWIs). Initial research was undertaken comparing both total collections and shared print retention commitments made by MSI institutions currently participating in both EAST and SCELC.
- Support Future Initiatives Supporting Expanding the Diversity of Shared Print Programs – As the project concludes, the Project Staff is disseminating results of the work with best practices and recommendations to continue the research as well as strategies and tactics for reducing the participation gap of MSIs in shared print.
In the years preceding the IMLS Grant, both SCELC and EAST had completed assessments of their shared print programs which were shared by the Project Staff with the Community Council and updated to reflect the value of participation in shared print as seen through the lens of a diverse group of academic libraries. The report SCELC and EAST Results of Shared Print Program Assessments is available now.
Additional resources will be made available to the community as the grant draws to an end.
